Why the wind never really stops on this coast
Belle Mare sits on the windward side of the island, and it shows the moment you step onto the sand. The lagoon here is wide and shallow, the breeze is fairly constant through the day, and mornings are usually calmer than afternoons, which is worth building a beach day around rather than discovering the hard way. That same wind is why the water looks the way it does in every photograph of this coast, and it is also why kite and wind sports cluster here rather than on the sheltered west side of Mauritius.
None of that changes what a car is for. It just changes what you are driving toward. On the west coast a car mostly closes the gap to dinner and to Chamarel. On this coast it also closes the gap to a completely different kind of morning, out on the water rather than beside it, and to the market towns and forest inland where the wind barely reaches at all.
One hour gets you anywhere on the island
A Belle Mare base can feel like it commits you to one coast, but the geography does not actually support that worry. The drive across the island to Port Louis or the west coast takes about an hour, mostly on the road inland through sugar cane toward the central plateau before it drops back down the other side. That makes day trips workable in almost any direction, not just along the coast you are staying on.
The coast road immediately around Belle Mare itself is a different story worth being honest about. It is a single two lane road that bends inland around the hotel estates rather than running straight along the water, so the distance on a map and the distance you actually drive are not the same thing. Build a few extra minutes into any plan that looks short on a screen.

None of this needs a long day out. Every stop below sits close enough to Belle Mare that it fits around a beach morning rather than replacing one.
Centre de Flacq
The biggest market town on the east side. The open market runs Sunday and Wednesday, and it is the closest thing to a proper high street this coast has.
Poste de Flacq and Saint Julien d'Hotman
Further up the coast, past the quieter chapel at Saint Julien d'Hotman. A slower run than Belle Mare's own strip.
Trou d'Eau Douce
South along the coast, and where the boats to Ile aux Cerfs actually leave from. Worth being there in good time rather than rushing a departure.
Grand River South East
The river mouth and its waterfall, a short detour off the coast road rather than a destination in itself.
Bras d'Eau National Park
A flat, quiet forest walk to the north that almost nobody without a car ever reaches.
A long hotel strip, with very little behind it
This is the single most useful thing to know before you book Belle Mare. Unlike Grand Baie or Flic en Flac, there is no dense run of shops and restaurants within walking distance of most hotels here. The coast is a long line of properties facing the lagoon, and the district behind it is quiet rather than built up. Guests who arrive without a car tend to end up eating half board every single night of the stay, not because the food is a problem but because there is nowhere close by to walk to instead.
Dinner becomes a decision again
A car turns the choice between the hotel restaurant and somewhere else back into an actual choice. Centre de Flacq and the towns along this coast are a short drive rather than a walk, but a short drive is still something. Half board stops being the default the moment there is a car parked outside.

Belle Mare is a long run of hotels facing the lagoon with very little town built up behind it, unlike Grand Baie or Flic en Flac where a dense strip of restaurants and shops sits a short walk from most beds. Guests who arrive without a car often end up eating half board every night simply because there is nowhere close by to walk to instead.

About forty five minutes from SSR. That is the shortest airport run of any of the island's big resort coasts, because Plaine Magnien and the airport itself sit in the south east, close to this side of Mauritius rather than across it.
Drive to Trou d'Eau Douce, a short run south down the coast road from Belle Mare, and the boats to Ile aux Cerfs leave from there. Having your own car for that morning means picking the departure time that suits you rather than a transfer someone else scheduled.
