The numbers behind four working towns

The one real traffic on the island
Every other page on this site can promise an easy road. This one cannot, not entirely: the M1 and M2 motorways funnel into Port Louis from the north and the south, and the morning and late afternoon runs into and out of the capital are the slowest driving you will do anywhere in Mauritius. The plan that works is simple: arrive mid-morning once the rush has cleared, and leave again before four in the afternoon.
A coupon on the windscreen, not a meter
Street parking in central Port Louis runs on prepaid parking coupons, sold at filling stations and shops around town and displayed on the windscreen for the hours you are parked. There are also paid car parks around the waterfront for anyone who would rather not hunt for a street space. Buy the coupon before you park, not after.
Three roads in, one of them worth the detour
The motorway is the fast way into the capital from either coast. The older coast road through Baie du Tombeau and the plateau road through Moka are slower but scenic, and either one turns the drive itself into part of the day rather than a stretch to get through.
What you actually drive into the capital for
Nobody bases a stay in Port Louis. You drive in for a morning or an afternoon, park once, and cover most of it on foot.
Le Caudan Waterfront and the Central Market
Le Caudan Waterfront sits right on the harbour, shops, cafes and the casino end of town in one place with parking nearby. A short walk inland, the Central Market runs fruit, spice and textile halls under one roof, the kind of stop that rewards arriving with nowhere else to be for an hour.
Place d'Armes, the Blue Penny Museum and Aapravasi Ghat
Place d'Armes and the government buildings sit at the formal heart of the capital, with the Blue Penny Museum close by. Aapravasi Ghat, the immigration depot where indentured labourers began arriving in 1849, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the more sobering stops on this page rather than a photo opportunity.
Champ de Mars and Chinatown
Champ de Mars is one of the oldest horse racing tracks in the world, and it runs on Saturdays in season with much of the capital in attendance. Chinatown is a few streets away, better covered on foot once the car is parked than as a drive-through.
Curepipe is where the coast stops feeling like Mauritius
Curepipe sits high enough on the plateau that the weather runs on its own rules: cooler and wetter than the coast on the same afternoon, which is exactly why it never attracted holidaymakers and exactly why residents live there instead. The Trou aux Cerfs crater sits in the middle of town, a short walk from the model ship workshops the town is known for, small operations that build the wooden ships sold across the island.

Rose Hill, Vacoas-Phoenix and the botanical garden next door
Quatre Bornes, Vacoas-Phoenix and Rose Hill run together as one conurbation on the plateau, and most visitors to Mauritius never see any of them. Quatre Bornes is known island-wide for its clothes market, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and large enough that finding a specific stall takes a plan rather than luck. Vacoas-Phoenix and Rose Hill fill in the rest of the plateau with the shops, schools and offices that make it, rather than the coast, where most Mauritians actually live.
Pamplemousses botanical garden sits just north of the capital and is an easy add-on to the same run into Port Louis rather than a separate day out. Take an hour or two at the garden on the way in or out of the capital, and you are back on the coast before evening.
