Why this fleet is Japanese, and automatic almost by accident
Used imports built for the job already
Toyota Aqua, Toyota Vitz, Nissan Note, Nissan March and Honda Fit turn up again and again across the price list because they were built for a right-hand-drive, automatic domestic market, in Japan, then shipped here used. An automatic home market produces an automatic secondhand fleet. The Chamarel climb
The road up from Chamarel village to the coloured earth car park doubles back on a steep switchback, and this is exactly where a manual on unfamiliar tarmac punishes a driver: find the clutch bite point on a gradient you have never seen, on the wrong side of a narrow road, while a bus edges past. An automatic removes the clutch part of that sentence entirely. Both hands and your whole attention stay on the steering and the verge, not on a pedal.
The road up to Curepipe
Long rather than steep, and where a CVT settles into a steady drone instead of hunting between gears. That drone is the transmission doing its job, not the engine struggling.

The seat swaps sides, the gear lever does not need you at all
For a driver used to a left-hand-drive manual on the right side of the road, the honest list of what changes here is shorter than it sounds. The hand that would be learning a mirrored gear pattern, up-down-up-down with the other hand for the first time, has nothing to do, because every listed car is automatic. What is left is steering position (you are on the right of the car now, not the left) and roundabout direction (clockwise, giving way to what is already on it). Both settle in over the first hour, usually by the second roundabout out of the airport.
One small surprise catches even experienced drivers: many Japanese-built cars in this fleet keep the indicator stalk on the right of the steering column and the wiper stalk on the left, the reverse of a typical European car. Give yourself one roundabout of wipers instead of indicators before it stops feeling backwards.
What stays exactly the same

Three ways the automatic will feel under your foot
Not every automatic drives the same. Nobody promises you a specific model, so here is what to expect from whichever one you are handed, without guessing which car has which box.
Continuously variable
Common in the Japanese-market imports. There are no fixed gear steps, so under acceleration the engine note rises and holds rather than climbing in stages. It can sound like the engine is working hard on a hill. It is not struggling, it is the transmission doing exactly what a CVT does.
Automated manual
Some of the Indian-built Suzuki and Perodua models in the fleet run an AMT, a manual gearbox with a clutch worked by a computer instead of your left foot. It pauses for a beat between shifts, a small dip in acceleration that feels different from a CVT's steady pull. That pause is normal, not a fault.
Conventional torque converter
The familiar automatic feel: smooth, stepped shifts with no pause and no drone. You will not know for certain which of the three you have been handed until you drive it, and it makes no difference to how you should drive: none of them need a clutch, and all of them hold the car on a hill without rolling back.

A CVT (continuously variable transmission) has no fixed gears to step through, so the engine note rises and holds under acceleration instead of climbing and dropping in stages. It can sound like the engine is working harder than it is. That drone is normal on the climb to Curepipe, not a sign of a struggling car.
Not in any way you would notice here. Nothing on the island is more than about ninety minutes away, so you are covering short hops between resorts and viewpoints rather than long motorway stretches where older automatics used to lose ground. Fuel cost is a rounding error against the hire itself.
Most drivers settle within the first hour, usually by the second roundabout. The automatic removes the one adjustment that actually costs concentration, so what is left is steering position and roundabout direction, both of which sort themselves out with a bit of deliberate attention on the drive out of the airport.
